I've been a product of being in the right place at the right time more times than i can count. For every negative thing that has happened in my entire life I can point out a mistake I made that led me to that place while many of the positives have been the result of coincidences where everything came together at the right time.
If you happened to be watching the Super Bowl on February 7 2016 with the 3rd largest TV audience in History you may have seen this commercial (click to check it out)
If you watched and you actually know me you may have said something along the lines of "Hey - wasn't that JC?" or "That guy looks like a guy i know..."
The image had been sitting around for 3 years. I created it the day that the NPS Boss Mark Suban reached out to ask if I was interested in applying at Nikon for the job that I currently have and love. I was playing with Lush Brand black soap while my daughter laughed at me while in Las Vegas for my previous job. I liked the Apocalypse Now look and since like many photographers I HATE photos of myself i'm most comfortable clowning around or making ridiculous faces in front of the camera. This was one of those cases. So after getting all the settings and composition right I took 3 photos with the soap on my face. The black and white seemed to work best.
Fast forward a few years and I get an email asking if a company can license one of my images. I say - "Yes - Which one?" They send me back a screen grab of the above image....asking if I'm still in touch with the model since they will need releases from both of us. I write back "yes - i know the model" laughing to myself.
They send the contracts - I agree - and while I knew the brand that the image would be used for....eventually. I did not know that it was going to be a Super Bowl ad. It was a secret. Even from me.
Fast forward again to Sunday night...i see the ad start and I'm still not 100% sure that my pic will be in it... it is.... my phone blows up and I have to say it was a giddy moment. I didn't get any life changing money but I did get a nice payment and i really respect the agency and jeep for not using stock and cutting corners. They paid a competitive price and gave a great outlet to some really cool images that I am honored to have been included amongst....
It was a great commercial if you ask me...and not because I was in it.
