I love flash. Anyone that knows me personally will eventually hear the words "flash would have made that better" Off camera flash changed my photographic journey. It was like finally finding out about spices after a lifetime of eating British food (hiss...boo...boo I kid I kid) 90% of the work that i shoot has some flash in it. Then there is the other. Over the last 7 years I was slowly introduced to the joys of slowing it down. Of seeing what the world looks like in seconds rather than micro-seconds. As time has gone by I've started to look at scenes that I would have walked by and think what the light really is when i was collecting it for 1 second, 10, 30, sometimes more rather than my normal 1/125 - 1/8000th of a second. Last night was one of those nights. It was already 10. Sun was well down in the West. The light pollution of NJ was there though behind the Statue of Liberty and the clouds were interesting. Not to the naked eye so much but the horizon line was clearly defined and I needed to run over and snap a shot. I didn't have a tripod so i found a post and put my wallet under the lens to get some upward direction....The sky at the top left of this image was the color that was visible through the entire sky to the naked but the hint of orange light at the bottom made me believe there was an image buried in there. Shooting the Nikon raw I knew I could pull detail from the shadows if I needed to...in this case the 30 seconds and the Nikon DR did the job in camera.
